Lewes gained ground on second-placed Bognor in Division One South with a 2-2 draw at Walton & Hersham.
The home side took the lead in the 21st minute when a free kick was not cleared and the ball found its way to David Cory who side-footed it in from close range.
Five minutes from the interval Lewes equalised with a sharp finish from six yards by Tony Reid even though he was surrounded by defenders.
The Rooks were much more positive in the second half and after a period of pressure they were awarded a penalty when Danny Davis was brought down in full flight by Sean Thurgood. Lee Newman tucked away the resultant spot kick to make it 2-1.
However, 20 minutes from time, it was the turn of the hosts to draw level when Neil Lampton was allowed too much time and space before chipping the ball over Russell Tanner.
Lewes were unlucky not to snatch a dramatic win in stoppage time after Graham Harper broke free down the right but saw his measured lob over advancing goalkeeper Nick Gindre strike the post and rebound to safety.
