I was somewhat surprised that Adam Trimingham, in his local elections assessment (The Argus, March 31), should describe Brunswick and Adelaide as a "safe Liberal Democrat seat" - or was he referring to the fact it was the only seat the Lib Dems won at the last elections?
In fact, the ward produced the only three Lib Dem councillors out of a total of 78.
The margin of victory was hardly "safe" either; the highest number of votes for any of the three Lib Dems was only 887, compared with 783 for the highest Labour candidate.
I think it is far from "safe" because the residents of Brunswick and Adelaide now appreciate that electing a candidate from one of the smaller parties, who will win only a handful of seats, is unproductive - these parties can never actually implement their policies or proposals.
More importantly, nor can they stop Tory policies. Only a Labour vote can do that.
