Schoolchildren went on a historical tour of Tarring to form a bridge between the past and the present.
The youngsters from Thomas A'Becket Middle School, Worthing, were taken by teacher Chris Horlock, a renowned historian and author.
Chris, whose class visited a series of locations, including St Andrew's Church and High Street, said: "Our history topic this term is on Victorians so we looked at Victorian Tarring using old maps, period photos, directory entries and census material.
"In particular, we studied a large scale 1898 map to get details of the buildings, farms and street pattern of Tarring more than 100 years ago.
The area was largely agricultural. Most houses had a water pump in the backyard, the post office was where it still is today while the Old Palace is shown on the 1898 map as a school building."
