Signs have gone up around Worthing town centre warning people not to drink in public.
Police have vowed to enforce the new Worthing Borough Council crackdown on drunks who plague the town centre and seafront.
The signs show a red line through cans and bottles, which can now be confiscated by police if they are opened.
People who refuse to hand over their alcohol containers face arrest and possibly a fine.
The council insists the crackdown, which includes the promenade, will not affect families enjoying a glass of wine on the beach or drinking outside pubs or cafes.
