Catching sight of the card stands and cluttered walls through the windows, it would be easy to dismiss the Naked Eye gallery as nothing more than a gift shop.

But make the move inside and you'll find an interesting range of original paintings alongside limited edition and photographic prints.

There is no unifying theme. Starring subjects include cats, clouds, storms, sharks, naked women and abstract designs.

"If I like something, I'll buy it," says gallery owner David Donno. "I go by artwork, not artist."

Recurring favourites are pieces by two Brighton artists.

Christian Black is an extreme sports fanatic. Currently on display are prints of the photographs he snapped through the bars of an underwater cage surrounded by sharks.

Yankel Feather is an established artist, specialising in bold paintings of nudes.

Now in his 80s, he moved to Brighton from London last month after a lifetime hanging out with arty greats such as Lowry and Sir Terry Frost.

David also lives in Brighton, the city where he was born and raised.

But his early adult life saw him working largely with the users of toothbrushes not paintbrushes.

"I originally trained in dentistry," says David, who followed his father into the family business. "After 15 years specialising in crowns and bridges I needed a change."

He began working in Brighton as a talent-spotter for a US gallery before travelling.

He says: "I ended up in The West Indies, until Hurricane Hugo destroyed the art gallery I was working in."

Back in Brighton, he opened The Naked Eye Gallery in 1999.

He puts its success down to picking good art and understanding what a client wants to live with.
