Carl Hopkinson fired 81 and Michael Yardy 71 for Sussex 2nd XI in their one-innings-a-side two-day clash against Hampshire at West End.
The 100 overs-a-side match has been split after 60 overs to ensure both sides experience the same conditions.
Sussex, who won the toss on the nursery ground at Southampton, reached 247-4 before pulling out temporarily, with Hampshire responding by reaching 139-2 in 40 overs.
Yardy, who compiled a dozen fours off 134 balls, put on 52 for the first wicket with trialist Ashley Wright (22) before Hopkinson joined him to add 127.
Brighton-born allrounder Hopkinson reached his half-century off only 62 balls, but then advanced slowly to 71 off another 58 deliveries before being bowled by David Schultz.
There were 13 fours and a six in Hopkinson's two-and-three-quarter hour innings.
Pace bowler Billy Taylor struck an early blow for Sussex when Hampshire batted by having Chris Benham leg before for 14, and Hopksinson later removed Lawrence Prittipaul (18) in similar fashion.
Opener Dominic Clapp, released after five years by Sussex at the end of last season and now on trial with Hampshire, batted steadily to reach 41 not out and was given useful support by Greg Lamb (26 not out) on what is a good batting wicket.
