Police have finished searching the Sussex woodland where murdered schoolteacher Jane Longhurst's burning body was found.

Today officers were putting up posters appealing for information in the area around Wiggonholt Common, near Pulborough.

Jane, 31, a music teacher at Uplands special school in Brighton, was last seen at the door of her home in the city's Shaftesbury Road on March 14.

She was strangled and her killer kept her body for several weeks before taking it to Wiggonholt and setting it on fire, probably in panic, on April 19.

Police hope a number of items found at the scene, including Jane's watch and a box of matches, may provide clues which will lead them to the killer.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Dennis, who is leading Operation Keen, said: "The items found at the scene by specialist police search teams are a significant breakthrough in the inquiry.

"The search has now been completed and the spot where Jane's burning body was discovered has been cleared.

"Inquiries will continue and officers are working around the clock. We are anxious for any information which may lead us to finding Jane's killer and urge anyone who either witnessed something suspicious in the area on Saturday night or who knows anything about what happened to come forward."

Officers still want to hear from the drivers of two cars seen in the area on Saturday night, a Ford Focus and a Renault Espace.

The driver of a third car has now come forward and been eliminated from the inquiry.

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 and ask for Operation Keen, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
