Gordon Dean, in his letter about supporting movie actor Richard Cromwell (June 6), mentioned Sir C Aubrey Smith, another actor who had strong Sussex ties.
Before becoming an actor, Sir Aubrey was an outstanding sportsman, playing soccer for the Corinthians and cricket for Cambridge.
Later, he captained the Sussex and English cricket teams, the latter on a tour to Australia in 1887 and also on the first England tour of South Africa.
Sir Aubrey was called "Round the Corner Smith" in his cricketing days because of his unusual bowling style. There's a plaque on the house he lived in in Hove.
