Hove MP Ivor Caplin already had a reputation for being a tough political operator in his role as a Government whip.
Now he will need plenty of steel and strength in his new job as junior defence minister after being promoted in Tony Blair's Government reshuffle.
Having a defence minister as their elected representative means residents within the borders of his Hove constituency should feel safe from enemy invasions.
