Watching the extraordinary Marilyn Manson performing recently on Jonathan Ross's TV show, it occurred to me that over the years there has always been someone bizarre to break the mould of ordinariness.
Back in the Sixties and Seventies, Tiny Tim with his falsetto tones grabbed our attention, together with Roy Wood of Wizard fame and the early David Bowie with his mindblowing make-up.
Boy George is still around, though his contemporary Marilyn faded from favour.
Of course, no list would be complete without Alice Cooper and "Prince Of Darkness" Ozzy Osborne, who stole the show at the Buckingham Palace pop concert.
For my money, however, Manson is the tops for showmanship.
