The Sussex Youth Games has been hailed as the most successful ever for Adur competitors.

All of the teams performed brilliantly, bringing a clutch of medals home from the Horsham event on June 8.

The Adur girl's football team won silver in their tournament, just missing out on gold in a nail-biting final that finished 0-0 and went to penalties.

The table tennis and the mixed tag rugby teams both won bronzes in their events and the mixed-learning disability football team and the girl's rugby team also did well, gaining fourth places.

Teams also competed in athletics, tennis and cricket.

Chris Dorrington, Adur District Council's assistant leisure development officer, said: "More than 70 young people living or attending schools in Adur took part.

"They all performed brilliantly on the day and should be proud of themselves.

"They also received loads of support from their team managers, local schools and community sports clubs."

Despite being the smallest district in England, Adur had teams in every event.

A council spokeswoman said: "All the young people who took part were aged between nine and 13.

"They have been working hard in the past few weeks by taking part in trials and training sessions.

"All of those involved in the games would like to thank Bramber Construction for their kind donation towards our cause."

Arun also won the Spirit of the Games award at this year's games.

The district's 120 young competitors were given the prestigious award after voting by organisers and officials.

The award replaced the overall top prize in this year's tournament and is based on sportsmanship and behaviour during the event.

Under the guidance of coach John Lawson, Arun's girls football team won first place, as did Arun's defending tennis champions in their event.

David Hibberd, the council's leisure development officer, said: "The success of the Arun teams on the sporting field and the achievement of winning the Spirit of the Games award is a great boost for sport in the district.

"It shows the district has many dedicated and sporting youngsters, as well as the coaches who give up much of their time to coach and guide them."

Arun's youth team were also the overall winners of the games in 1998 and 1999.
