A day care centre in Worthing for adults with learning difficulties has received a cash boost thanks to a mother of five, who decided to raise funds by running in the London Marathon.

Vicky Nolan wanted to raise money for The Pines Day Care Centre in Durrington, because her cousin, Richard Rydon, has Downs syndrome and attends the centre on a regular basis.

Vicky completed the 26-mile course around the capital in four hours and 39 minutes and managed to raise £4,500 for the day care centre as well as £2,500 for Mencap.

Vicky, who comes from Derbyshire, said: "I enjoy running but this was definitely the first and last time I will be taking part in a marathon.

"I am really glad I have been able to not only achieve one of my personal goals but also raise some money for Richard and everyone else at The Pines."

During the day, Vicky was cheered on by her family, including Richard.

They followed the race via the tube, popping up at various points to shout their support.

Manager of The Pines Sam Laker said: "Everyone at The Pines wants to say a huge thank you to Vicky for this amazing effort she has made.

"We are always trying to raise funds, and this money will make a real difference to everyone who comes to the centre."

The Pines works to enable people with learning difficulties to be as independent as possible, learning skills such as money awareness, road safety, cooking, education and computer skills.

The centre also encourages community participation with trips out locally and activities ranging from ten-pin bowling to swimming.
