Danny Chambers struck a match-winning unbeaten 71 to lead Kent to a narrow two-wicket victory over Sussex in the opening 2nd XI Trophy match.

Kent, chasing 204 in the 50 overs clash at Tonbridge School, got home with two overs to spare after being reduced to 80-6.

Chambers revived them by sharing in a seventh wicket stand of 71 with James Dewly (32). Irishman Rob Piesley (13) later joined him as an unbroken 52 were added for the ninth wicket with Chambers scoring 39 of the runs.

Chambers fired seven fours and a six, facing 104 balls. Sussex fast bowler Shaun Rashid, who had 3-3 from four overs at one stage, finished with 3-38 from ten overs, while Billy Taylor had 2-28 in nine overs.

Sussex, who won the toss, were dismissed for 203 with three balls of their innings remaining, former Somerset pace bowler Peter Trego taking 5-25 in 9.3 overs.

Horsham duo Andrew Hodd (40) and Luke Marshall (43) added 90 for the seventh wicket.

Marshall was caught at deep square leg off Trego, having faced 49 balls and Hodd fell to the same bowler having played 57 deliveries.

Former Leicestershire batsman Ashley Wright struck 33 but fellow opener Richard Montgomerie was trapped leg before by opening bowler Mark Joseph for only four.

In-form Carl Hopkinson made 21 but was later forced out of the game to play in the Twenty20 clash at Hove.

Coach Mark Robinson took his place and went on to bowl five overs for 19 runs.

The Sussex Premier League XI went out of the new inter-league knockout, beaten by six wickets by their Essex counterparts at Brentwood. Sean Heather top scored for Sussex with 89 and Paul Harrison made 40 as they set 251-8.
