Sussex's first medical school has made two more key appointments.

Professors Di Watt and Helen Smith have been named chairs of anatomy and primary care respectively at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

The school takes in its first batch of student doctors this September for the start of a five-year course.

It is run by the universities of Brighton and Sussex, with Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton the main teaching hospital.

During the course, students will also work at other hospitals, health centres, GP surgeries and mental health units across the county.

Prof Watt was previously reader in anatomy at the faculty of medicine at Imperial College, London, where she was closely involved in the design of the school of medicine's new curriculum.

She has been involved in extensive research, including studies to develop therapies for treating people with muscular dystrophy.

She said: "Being in at the start of a new medical school is a very exciting prospect and I am very much looking forward to contributing to the innovative course."

Prof Smith was formerly reader in the University of Southampton's primary medical care group, where she directed the Wessex Research Network.

She said: "I hope my department will be able to develop strong and productive links with many local general practices."
