Congratulations to the driver of the orange Range Rover seen outside the Whitehawk Library in Arundel Road on Tuesday morning. He really ought to be considered for some sort of award.

This pillar of the community, when faced with two seagulls in the street fighting over a piece of cake, didn't slow down or even bib his hooter.

He simply decided to drive right into them, killing one of them outright and causing alarm to everyone who was watching.

The driver didn't bother to stop and pick the bird from out of the middle of the street so it wouldn't have to be seen by passing schoolchildren.

He was in far too much of a hurry to get to work.

Fortunately, some of the onlookers were sufficiently concerned to deal with the dead bird themselves.

I know some people in our city don't care for seagulls but it would have taken a hard heart not to be disturbed by the sight of the two dozen or so other gulls who wheeled upset and crying over the scene.
