A major research project to identify what health care services are needed by people with life-limiting conditions is now under way at Worthing Hospital.
The researcher, Phil Cotterell, is looking to recruit 20 to 30 people from the Adur, Arun and Worthing area to take part in this study. He wants to hear from people with illnesses where normal life expectancy is not considered likely.
Mr Cotterell, who is undertaking the research in conjunction with St Barnabas Hospice, said: "The level of support available to people with life-limiting conditions varies considerably and in the past has mainly been provided at hospices for people with cancer and motor neurone disease.
"My project involves all life-limiting conditions such as heart failure, respiratory conditions or HIV/Aids. Its focus is on asking the service user what they think they need in the way of help and support."
Participants will be given clear information about the research before being interviewed. Some will be invited to take part in focus groups. All information is confidential and the project is being supervised by Brunel University.
The findings aim to identify areas of good practice and any shortfalls in care or services. Findings will be shared with local providers of health and social care in order to change things for the better.
