Littlehampton Community School hosted the first inter high schools girls' football tournament on Monday.

The tournament was held to give more opportunities for girls in Years 8 and 9 to play football and to promote an Active Sports Kick Start programme starting in October in Worthing.

Ten teams from five schools across Adur, Arun and Worthing took part in the tournament organised by Worthing Borough Council's leisure development unit.

With girls' football becoming more and more popular, the tournament also gave the girls an opportunity to compete against teams from other districts.

The teams from Worthing High School, Davison High School, Westergate Community School, Angmering School, Littlehampton Community School and King's Manor Community School all displayed some strong performances throughout the afternoon.

The tournament saw the teams battle through the initial round robin stages to reach the semi-finals.

Littlehampton A took on Angmering A in the first semi, which was tight throughout with Angmering A emerging victorious after a penalty shoot-out.

The second semi saw King's Manor, who were unbeaten in the round robin stage, beat Angmering B. The tension continued until the end as the final also came down to penalties with King's Manor finally winning to take home the shield after some superb saves from their goalkeeper.

Liz Squires, youth leisure development officer at Worthing Borough Council, said: "This was the first year the tournament has taken place and many of the schools have already asked for it to repeated next year.

"There were 80 to 90 girls taking part, which is great to see, and hopefully many will join local clubs and continue their football further."

The Kick Start programme starts in Worthing in October which is a great opportunity for any girls interested in football.

It is open to girls of all levels between ten and 16 years of age at Worthing Leisure Centre where training and games will be run by qualified coaches.

The cost is only £10 for eight weeks and if you would like any more information or on details to book please contact Michelle Lawrence on 01273 643198 or Liz Squires on 01903 221121.
