The Reverend David Burt has been appointed curate with special responsibility for St Laurence's Church in Worthing.
He was offered the post by the Reverend Andrew Tremlett, the new vicar of the parish of St Mary's in Goring.
St Laurence's, in Sea Place, is one of the smallest churches in the town but has a thriving children's section.
Mr Burt said: "I was surprised and delighted when Andrew asked me and I was most pleased to accept.
"The Bishop of Horsham will licence me for this appointment today at a Eucharist in his chapel. I am very much looking forward to working in the parish in my new capacity."
