Footballers at Angmering School came a respectable second in a girls football tournament.

The event was organised by Worthing Borough Council's leisure development unit.

The team were runners-up of their group, winning three matches against Durrington High School, Littlehampton Community School and Davison High School and losing only to Kings Manor School.

The team then went through to the semi-finals playing against Littlehampton Community School who had gained the most points in their group.

Angmering School won the match and went through to play Kings Manor School again in the final.

It was a very close game finishing with a draw at the end of time allowed, so going to a nail-biting penalty shootout.

Kings Manor won the penalties to take the shield and Angmering School were presented with second place medals.

Angmering School entered two teams in the tournament, finishing as runners-up and in third place overall.

Littlehampton Community School finished in fourth place overall and Westergate Community School ended as third in their group.

The tournament was organised as a result of two years' work Worthing's leisure development unit has been doing with middle schools in the town and provided those who had moved up to secondary schools the opportunity to compete and be involved in football.

There is also a new kick start programme starting in October in both Arun and Worthing, which will provide the opportunity for girls to experience football and hopefully join a team in their area.

The South Coast Sports Charities Society provided referees for the tournament and both Worthing and Arun would like to thank them for their support and also the schools for taking part and all of the supporters on the day.
