I am disabled. I do not use buses. My partner is disabled.
She does use buses in East Sussex, mainly to get between my home and Polegate railway station.
I live on a bus route for the Hailsham town bus which does not run at the times she needs to use it.
She has to be in Brighton to work by 9am on weekdays.
To walk to the nearest bus stop is tiring and hazardous due to slopes, uneven pavements, roads with no pedestrian crossings and nowhere to sit or shelter at the bus stop.
The services to Polegate railway station seem to be operated by more than one bus firm and choosing which service to aim for is very confusing.
The bus stop in Hailsham High Street which used to display bus times has gone.
A number of buses to Polegate do not go to the railway station.
On coming to Polegate from Brighton after work, the bus to Hailsham does not stop at the railway station but to catch it she has to cross the busy High Street and go a tiring distance to the stop.
On arrival in Hailsham, the town bus does not run so she has to walk from South Road to Woodpecker Drive.
If I can, to save her all this effort, I drive to Polegate to collect her. When I do, I see many people collecting and dropping off rail passengers from private cars.
I would like to see: * Hailsham town bus run a frequent and regular service to and from Polegate railway station before the working day begins until after it finishes.
* Stops for the Hailsham town bus should be identified with details of the times and the routes provided.
* Hailsham town buses should indicate on the vehicles which routes they serve.
* Other services should indicate on timetables and on the vehicles if they link up with Polegate railway station or any other public transport.
* There should be a combined timetable of all services.
* All buses through Polegate should go within 50 yards of the railway station and should set down and collect passengers from the railway station without them having to cross any roads.
Some of these points should be applicable to all public transport services.
No route should be regarded as unprofitable if it is feeding passengers into the wider public transport system.
Public transport should be regarded as a service used to reduce other road traffic, or will private enterprise never see the broad picture of an integrated transport policy?
