The Orb are best known for their 1993 release Little Fluffy Clouds.
Catchy melodies, cockerels and jet planes were iced over with a hypnotic sample of Ricki Lee Jones describing childhood memories of sunsets and clouds, perfectly catching the ambient mood of the time.
Founder Orb members were Jimmy Cauty (who went on to work with KLF) and Alex Paterson.
Paterson claims it was Grosses Wassers by Cluster and Music For Films by Brian Eno which got Jimmy into ambient music.
"I dropped acid and listened to these albums and thought to myself 'My God. This is brilliant'."
Since their first fiddles and splashes in the late Eighties, many faces have passed through the towers of dub, including Youth, Steve Hillage, Miquette Giraudy (aka System 7) and Kris "Thrash" Weston.
Little Fluffy Clouds was followed by the acclaimed album U.F.Orb, which became a cult hit with an emerging chemical generation.
"It was clear we were for a new generation - we weren't Pink Floyd", says Paterson.
"It was a natural evolution of dance music in this country and it basically came from spilling out of clubs at three in the morning and ending up at someone's house."
However, friction between band members and their record label, Big Life, resulted in the Orb switching to Island Records in 1993 and things were never the same again.
A string of half-baked albums (Live 93, Pomme Fritz - Orb's Little Album in 1994 and Orbvus Terrarvum in 1995) left the fans disillusioned while the critics had a field day.
It may have been a case of over indulging in recreational substances or just a result of being over-experimental.
What is certain is that things went a little pear-shaped for a while.
But, after almost three years of silence, The Orb returned in style in 1997 with their album Orblivion and single Toxygene.
The Orb have now parted company with Island Records but that hasn't stopped Alex recording a new album.
It is called Bicycles and Tricycles and Alex worked with friends including Thomas Fhelmann, John Roome and Jimmy Cauty.
Other projects in the pipeline include Mad Professor mixing up Orb tracks and The Orb mixing Mad Professor tracks to be released as an album.
The show starts at 9pm and tickets cost £13.50.
