The "star" ratings for hospitals published this week add to the trend of items of news concerning the health service referring to targets missed, reached or exceeded.
What the general public is to make of these judgements is sometimes difficult to fathom but it is these judgements, rather than those made by patients who have experienced the service, that fill our newspapers.
Recently, I spent some time in the Bristol ward of the Royal Sussex County Hospital where quality was second to none.
Staff were personable without being sentimental, professional and efficient while maintaining appropriate humour and warmth.
Whether Bristol ward met its targets and achieved its stars I don't know but I would recommend the Sussex County to others without hesitation.
