Dilly Newton helped England win a bronze medal at the European Under-16s Championships in Lithuania.

Newton, who is only 14, scored in the 3-0 victory against Spain which clinched third place.

She said: "I am used to playing against older girls who are stronger than me when I train for my country and when I play for my club, Eastbourne. When it came to the matches it didn't bother me. I was able to cope."

Newton, from Upper Dickerm, near Eastbourne, helped England beat Poland 7-0 and France 1-0, but could do nothing to prevent defeats against Germany (5-1) and Holland (4-0).

The St Bede's pupil said: "I was nervous and excited but it was a fantastic experience. I loved playing for my country and, hopefully, I can continue to do so when I become a senior and perhaps even make it to the Olympics one day."

Newton also played for England against Spain in Barcelona in Easter.

Hockey runs in the Newton family. Sisters Victoria and Kate were in the Eastbourne side which claimed the national under-18s cup last season, while Dilly played as the club reach the semi-finals of the under-16s' competition.

Chris Barber helped Wales to fifth place in the European Boys' Under-18s Championships in Gniezno, Poland.

Wales beat Denmark 8-1, lost to the hosts (3-2) and Switzerland (2-1) but qualified for the second group stage where they defeated Croatia 5-0 and drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic. England won the tournament.

Barber, an Ardingly College pupil, qualifies for Wales through his grandfather. He said: "I enjoyed the experience. We had a good side and could have done even better."

He hopes to progress to Wales under-21s next season.

Brother Tim is following in Chris' footsteps. He played for Wales under-16s against France last season and is due for trials with the under-18s.
