Two crime-busting schemes in West Sussex have been named the top two in the South-East.
Horsham and Chichester's crime and disorder reduction partnerships have been highlighted by the Home Office as the best performing in the region.
The partnerships bring together local councils, police, the fire brigade and health authorities to tackle crime.
Hugh Marriage, Home Office crime reduction director for the South-East, said: "Police work in Sussex is improving and maintains a good relationship with local authorities and partners."
Home Office figures released last week show Sussex Police has achieved a 3.1 per cent reduction in total crime from 2002/03. This builds on the 1.3 per cent cut in the previous year.
Chichester district councillor Brian Hooton, portfolio holder for community safety, said: "We are delighted the hard work can now be evidenced in the reduction of crime."
