In 1992, Jamaican dancehall DJ Buju Banton attained notoriety for his controversial anti-gay song Boom Bye Bye that advocated violence against homosexuals.

Since then, many have refused to give him the time of day but to think of Buju Banton only in terms of this song is to miss out on a wealth of excellent reggae music.

Like many other Buju fans, I do not condone the sentiments expressed in Boom Bye Bye but I find it difficult to resist his exciting rhythms.

Once onstage, Buju sang hit after hit for about 90 minutes. The appreciative crowd lapped up favourites such as Champion, My Woman Now, It's All Over, Untold Stories, Hills And Valleys, Pull It Up and Til Shiloh.

Having seen Buju perform several times since the early Nineties, I can say this performance was solid but lacked an edge.

The songs from his new album are pretty strong but they don't reach the heights of Til Shiloh. Despite that, Buju continues to be one of reggae's most energetic ambassadors.
