A man has been jailed for more than a year after admitting making a hoax bomb threat to a Brighton cinema.
Simon Yarwood, 24, pleaded guilty to the offence at Lewes Crown Court.
The hearing was told Yarwood, who is currently in Lewes Prison, borrowed the mobile phone of a student he met on Brighton seafront on March 25.
After claiming he needed to speak to his mother, Yarwood called the emergency services and said there was a bomb at the nearby Odeon.
He then passed the phone back to the student, who was called back by the emergency operator.
The student explained what had happened and police were sent to arrest Yarwood, the court heard.
His counsel Pierce Power said: "The defendant has no real explanation as to why he made this disastrous call."
Yarwood admitted making the hoax threat and admitted spitting in the face of a female officer who arrested him.
He was sentenced to 13 months' imprisonment.
Judge Richard Brown told Yarwood, who has 50 previous convictions: "This sort of offence can cause chaos."
