South African trialist Anthony Botah took 4-90 in 21 overs on his debut to help Sussex's 2nd XI dismiss Somerset for 322 on the opening day of the Championship match at Taunton.
The left-arm spinner, who played in one 2nd XI match for Somerset in the 1996 season, included skipper Keith Dutch (79) among his victims.
Sussex lost Neil Turk for only five and Carl Hopkinson for 43 in reaching 107-2 in 25 overs in reply. Rain delayed the start until 1.30pm and two 48-over sessions followed.
Botah ended a seventh-wicket stand of 97 between Dutch and Keith Andrew (32) by having the former caught behind by wicketkeeper Richard Young.
Sussex also gave a debut to Pakistani fast bowler Irfan Fazil, on the recommendation of compatriot Mushtaq Ahmed, and he claimed the useful wickets of Carl Gazzard (63) and James Hildreth (10).
Mike Yardy, not required by the first team, arrived by mid afternoon and was therefore restricted to only four overs, while off spinner Chris Nash helped mop up the tail in finishing with 2-28 in 9.2 overs.
Hopkinson accounted for both openers Dominic Clapp and Matt Wood and they were both caught at the wicket by Young for 37 and 28 respectively.
Sussex suffered an early shock when Andrew had Turk leg before and Hopkinson was removed in similar fashion to Jonathan Lewis before Yardy (30) and Bas Zuiderent (16) took their side through to stumps.
