Simon Smith provides an excellent analysis of the causes of the shortage of affordable housing and the reasons for the broken promises of the New Labour government (Letters, July 23).
There is only one point to add. What he sees as the problem may really be the solution.
If the Government builds more council houses, thus saving millions of pounds of taxpayers' money, the private rental sector may collapse.
Local authorities could then buy up all those properties cheaply and let them to anyone who needs housing.
Sounds like heaven to me.
