Peter Poole is right. The new Tesco store in Hove has destroyed the sense of place there (Letters, July 25).
If the flint wall (or even part of it) had been retained and the flint villas and Thirties showroom had been kept as part of the development, Tesco would have had to design its store to fit in with the existing townscape.
Instead, it took the easy way out - opened a drawer in its plans chest, pulled out one of its standard designs and plonked it on to a clear site.
Apparently Tesco will rejuvenate George Street but Sainsbury's at the Vogue Gyratory has led to the demise of shopping in Lewes Road.
Gas holders near Kings Cross have been listed and on the Continent they have enclosed new circular buildings. Now that would have been an innovative shape for Tesco.
