It is depressing that Brighton and Hove City Council has failed to come to the obvious conclusion about the problem of teenagers putting themselves in danger by diving into the sea from Brighton Pier and the breakwater from Brighton marina harbour.

This problem is a symptom of a failure to recognise the potential of the sea. We need proper diving boards in the right place, with supervision by qualified instructors.

It would cost money but there are lottery funds and other grants available for precisely this kind of thing.

This would restore an important piece of Brighton's heritage. At one time, there were diving boards at the end of the West Pier and changing facilities for swimmers at the far ends of both piers so that proficient swimmers could plunge straight into deep water.

The stupid behaviour of the teenagers should be heeded as a wake-up call.
