Horsham drew 1-1 at Walton and Hersham in a see-saw division one south match.
Despite dominating for long periods the Hornets were thankful to goalkeeper Ian Chatfield for keeping them in the game with three breathtaking saves in a three-minute spell in the second half.
A spectacular diving header from Reggie Savage brought the hosts back into the game ten minutes into the second half but Horsham should have had it won by then.
They had by far the best of the opening period and took the lead after 25 minutes when Lee Carney's short corner was crossed into the box by Chris Hall and Gary Charman directed a header just inside the post.
Charman twice headed wide from good positions at the far post and he was off target when clean through on goal in the 50th minute.
Manager John Maggs said: "If Gary had taken his chances he could have had a hat-trick."
Lewes recovered from a tame first half to draw 1-1 with promotion favourites Staines at the Dripping Pan.
In his first managerial programme notes with the Rooks, Steven King warned the match might turn out to be "the toughest home game we have all season."
Lewes created almost nothing in the first half. Despite the presence of former Albion marksman Craig Maskell up front, Staines were not much more effective but did go in front through a Steve Battams header after 25 minutes.
With new signing Dwain Clarke impressing on the left wing, the Rooks were more purposeful after the break and it was Clarke who created a debut goal for Marc Whiteman ten minutes into the second half.
