A depressed man hanged himself just weeks after his girlfriend lost their baby, an inquest heard.
Michael Mills's body was found in the loft of flats where he lived with his girlfriend in Victoria Road, Worthing, on May 30.
An inquest at Worthing Hospital heard it had been hard for the 29-year-old to cope with losing the baby.
His girlfriend, Margaret Martin, said: "I was worried about him. He was very low.
"I lost the baby so that was very hard for him as he was looking forward to the birth.
"I thought he was suicidal the last time I saw him.
"He was very depressed and would talk about killing himself but we used to talk through it and he used to go off on his own.
"He would sometimes laugh it off so I didn't know if he was being serious."
The inquest heard Mr Mills, a self-employed handyman, was last seen on May 9.
His father John, from Guildford, Surrey, said his son had been on medication for his depression but had stopped taking it because it was not working.
Recording a verdict of suicide, West Sussex coroner Roger Stone said: "We have no evidence why he chose that moment.
"We have some evidence he had been low and used to speak of self-harm but he never harmed himself before."
