In this age when we hear nothing but criticism of the police I would like to thank Sussex Police for all their work to uphold law and order in Ringmer.
A year ago we had quite serious problems with crime so I asked for an informal meeting with the police.
Within a couple of weeks, myself, Chief Inspector Jim Taylor, Inspector Dave Padwick and PC Mark Cranley were discussing what the police, the parish council and residents could do to combat crime.
I cannot compliment the above named officers more highly for their commitment and patience.
Chief Superintendent Paul Pearce has also taken an active interest.
Other local groups have been actively involved, like Ringmer Against Drivers Acting Recklessly (Radar) and the community college under its principal Kathy Stonier.
Youth worker Danielle Price is out most evenings with her assistants come rain or shine.
The neighbourhood watch has been brought into the 21st Century with its own web site.
With the co-operation of all these groups, plus other individuals, we have achieved: A decrease in crime of all types; A public meeting attended by those mentioned and more than 60 residents; Radar volunteers operating a speed-gun in Ringmer; Police Week with speed indicator displays, a police information centre and police visits to local schools; A police surgery every month giving residents the chance to air their concerns; Daily police patrols, particularly at weekends, including foot patrols in the evening; Ringmer's own special constable, Mike Marchant, who is very much like a "local bobby" - something all of us want to see the return of. And so it goes on.
The situation isn't perfect - I doubt it ever will be - but ,through co-operation with all parties and the police, the situation can be improved.
-Councillor Stuart Bean, police liason, Ringmer Parish Council
