The binmen's £230 bank holiday rate is entirely reasonable.
At double time for a 7.5 hour shift it would reflect a base rate of £15.33 per hour.
Every Brighton worker needs to earn at least that base rate to live in this City of rip-off housing costs and prices.
At present we live in a low wage economy and tolerate gross inequalities in wealth.
The council's chief executive will earn £145,000 come October, which represents a daily rate of £558. That is enough to pay for five binmen the whole year round.
Instead of attacking the binmen, we should encourage the low-paid, like journalists, care workers and call centre workers, to unionise and emulate them.
Then maybe we might see some genuine fairness and prosperity.
