For almost every job the applicant must possess some form of qualification but for one of the most important- being a parent- anyone can do it.
Yes, to drive a car on the roads in this country you have to pass a test.
To become a doctor, teacher or an electrician you must undergo rigorous training.
But to have a child, except for the obvious, you don't really have to do anything.
And there lies the problem.
Full marks to residents on the Durrington estate who have decided enough is enough and made a stand against the teenage hoodlums that are running riot in that part of the town.
But what about the parents of these youngsters?
They haven't exactly covered themselves in glory when it comes to parenting skills.
It is the parents who are the key to a lot of the problems with teenage yobs in and around Worthing.
Some may call it a draconian measure but if we started punishing and ultimately fining parents for the actions of their children, they would soon start taking more of an interest in what their little darlings were up to.
Because, looking at the bigger picture, if these people fail to set a good example, what kind of parents will their children be in 20 years time?
It's a frightening thought.
So the old Police station in Union Place is to be sold for development.
Clearly you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to work out what might end up happening.
I understand the lease of the neighbouring NCP car park hasn't got that long to go.
So could the Connaught Theatre be approaching its final curtain?
It is something that has been rumoured for many years and even now I think there might be people on Worthing Borough Council who will not be happy until the town's premier theatre is reduced to rubble.
I sincerely hope it doesn't happen.
I was disappointed to note the Burlington Hotel did not receive a restoration award from the borough council.
Organisers of the competition, which rewards developers of good-looking buildings, said they did not receive a nomination from the hotel.
They also said the scheme had been finished in time for this year's contest.
But let us all hope it sweeps the board next year.
The hotel's owners, the Packham family, have worked wonders turning a white elephant into not only a going concern but also the trendiest nightspot in Worthing, with superb accommodation as well.
The Packhams have spent more than £1 million on the restoration, with little or no help from the council.
They deserve credit where credit is due.
