A driver was hit on the head during a road rage attack thought to have taken place after an accident.
The incident happened just outside Tesco on the A281 in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham, at around 11am on Sunday.
The driver of a blue Ford Sierra was struck by the front-seat passenger of a small blue Ford.
Police believe the assault happened after one of the cars crashed into the back of the other. Both cars then moved off towards Guildford, Surrey.
A number of people stopped at the scene. One called the police but did not leave any contact details.
Police are appealing to anyone who saw the incident to contact PC Sarah Williams at Horsham police station on 0845 6070999.
