A young man suffered appalling injuries when he was set upon by a mob of up to five men.
The victim, in his 20s, was left with a broken eye socket, injuries to his kidneys and severe bruising to his head and body.
He was punched and kicked to the ground in Uckfield town centre in the car park behind Bell Walk and kicked again.
He was taken to hospital and will be off work for several weeks. Detectives have appealed to anyone who may have information about the assault on August 29 at 11pm.
Detective Constable Rob Lovell, leading the investigation, said: "Apparently there were a number of bystanders. I'd urge them to come forward."
Mr Lovell is at Uckfield CID on 0845 6070999 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
