I was incredulous to read that it is costing West Sussex County Council £1,000 a week to keep each of the 100 Diego Garcian refugees in a hotel in Crawley (The Argus, September 10).
This is a cost of £100,000 a week or £5million a year. Surely there must be far cheaper hotels which would be adequate for the purpose.
However, I also read that Councillor Harold Hall is asking Tony Blair for the Government to pay the cost of £500,000 a year which is £10,000 a week at £100 per refugee. This is more reasonable but still a lot for council tax payers to pay. But which figures are correct?
