The man from Brazil drove Eastbourne Eagles nuts at Arlington Stadium on Saturday night.

Antonio Lindback marked his Elite League debut for Poole Pirates by scoring an amazing win over world title contender Nicki Pedersen in only his second race at the Sussex track.

And he went on to prove it was no fluke by beating high-flying Finn Joonas Kylmakorpi in 56.2sec, a fraction over 1sec outside the track record held by world champion Tony Rickardsson and one of the fastest times of the night.

While the fans came to see three of the world's top four current riders in Pedersen, Rickardsson and Leigh Adams, they might well have witnessed the first Arlington appearance of a future No. 1.

The 18-year-old South American, who races out of Sweden, recently became only the second rider in Poole's 56-year history to go through seven races at senior level unbeaten by an opponent when he scorched to a 21-point paid maximum on his British League Cup debut.

Lindback was awesome against Pedersen and Kylmakorpi, Eastbourne's top scorers, roaring out of the gate and refusing to be fazed as he was put under pressure by the two Eagles.

He finished the night with seven points as the Pirates plundered a 47-43 win, his victory over Pedersen even more remarkable because it came after he had been sent crashing through the fence in his only previous race.

It completed a clean sweep for Poole in their four league clashes with Eagles this season and underlined why they are top of the pile while Eastbourne have finished with only two teams below them.

Eagles won only four of the 15 races but packed the minor placings in a match which went right down to the wire.

Mark Loram was back to his best with a great ride in heat six, when he held off Rickardsson by inches in the best race of the night, and Pedersen stormed to victory against Adams in heat 11.

But they were the only Eastbourne successes in the battle of the big guns. Adams beat Loram in the opener, while Rickardsson headed Pedersen in heat four in the fastest time of the night, 55.6sec, half a second outside the record.

And when it came to the crunch, it was a no contest, with the Poole pairing racing to 5-1 wins over Pedersen and Loram in heats 13 and 15, either side of Lindback's victory against Kylmakorpi.

Eagles were twice in front, a 5-1 from David Norris and Kylmakorpi in heat eight putting the home side 25-23 ahead, and the gap was four points when Kylmakorpi and Dean Barker posted a maximum in heat 12 to make it 38-34.

The writing was on the wall, however, after Rickardsson and Adams had blitzed Pedersen and Loram in the next. A repeat was always on the cards in the finale.

While it was no real surprise that Poole held the aces in the clashes between the Grand Prix rivals, what did for Eastbourne in the final reckoning were the points gathered by Lindback and the riders filling in for Lukas Dryml, Krzysztof Kasprzak and Ales Dryml.

Guest man Jason Lyons won two races, beating Barker and then both Loram and Norris, while Andrew Moore, another rider making his first Arlington appearance, scorched to an early win against Kylmakorpi.
