Peace activists heard from an investigative journalist who believes prisoners are being mistreated in the US base Camp X-ray.

Felicity Arbuthnot, was a special guest at yesterday's meeting of campaign group Worthing Against War at the Downview pub in Tarring Road.

She said: "For 18 months more than 600 young Muslim men of all nationalities have been incarcerated in cages 8ft by 6ft 6in and subject to inhuman and degrading treatment.

"They are denied access to legal advice and have no contact with the outside world.

"Their treatment breaks all international laws.

"Now, two British subjects, Feroz Abbasi and Moazzam Begg, are to be put on trial before a military tribunal.

"Their human rights are being denied by the US military.

"A total of 218 MPs from all political parties have signed a parliamentary resolution to have all the detainees repatriated to their own countries.

"If the evidence against them does not stand up to scrutiny, then these prisoners in no-man's-land should be released.

"They have suffered enough. Why doesn't the British Government stand up to America?

"Why doesn't the Government condemn this disgraceful treatment of its own citizens?"
