A man's jaw was fractured and another suffered a punctured lung after a street brawl in the early hours of today.
Three men and a woman were walking up St James's Street in Brighton when they were attacked by three men outside Colourama and Boots at about 2.30am.
The first group had just been to a burger bar and a late-night off-licence where they had bought bottles of beer.
A 20-year-old man from Brighton had his jaw fractured in at least six places and was cut, possibly by a bottle.
He was said to be in a serious but not life-threatening condition.
Another 20-year-old man from Brighton had a punctured lung. A 21-year-old woman from Peacehaven was unhurt.
Police believe broken bottles were possibly used as weapons.
The fourth member of the group chased the three attackers up St James's Street and along Dorset Gardens into Edward Street.
He received black eyes and cuts to his face and was later found to have suspected fractured ribs.
Police believe the clash is linked with a fight between several men on the Old Steine park area at about 1.50am today.
Anyone with information should call Detective Sergeant Glenn Taylor on 0845 6070999.
