Burgess Hill boss Gary Croydon defended his team's somewhat negative approach as they slipped to a second successive defeat at leaders Histon.
Croydon, who opted for a 4-5-1 formation for the first time in four years, said: "Although I'm not sure I'll be using it again, I feel it is important we keep things tight this season.
"This is a whole new game for us at this level and we really can't afford to take heavy defeats. That does nothing at all for team morale.''
The opener on 34 minutes was a fluke from distance by defender Roscoe Hipperson. Ian Cambridge added the second after 78 minutes.
