Many parents are drastically underestimating the cost of university education and are totally unprepared to fund their children through degree courses.
Although 92 per cent of parents say they intend to fund their child's higher education, well over a third have not started saving for the costs, now estimated to be £22,500 for a three-year degree.
Some 29 per cent of parents plan to take out a loan and one in 10 are relying on inheritance, reveals the survey commissioned by Abbey National.
