As opposition to the proposed development of airports in the South-East mounts, it is time to question our attitude to the cheap flights that have fuelled these expansions.

The flights are cheap because the Government does not levy a tax on aviation fuel.

By not taxing, the Government is effectively subsidising a polluting form of transport and is failing to raise income for public services such as hospitals and schools.

We have to decide where our priorities lie - cheap weekends to Prague for the relatively well-off or improvements to education and health services.
