There was a record-breaking start to the Sussex Cross Country League season at Goodwood.

All of the first four runners in the senior men's five-mile race smashed the course record.

Brighton and Hove's Mike Buss led through the first half-mile before Hailsham's Ben Warren took over.

Warren led at the end of the first of the two laps and broke the one-lap record set at the Sussex cross country relay championships over the same course.

However, former All England Schools intermediate 3,000m champion Craig Ivemy came through strongly over the second half of the race to record an impressive victory over his clubmate in 24min.43sec.

Ivemy's time was more than half-a-minute quicker than the course record set by Brighton and Hove's Nigel Gates.

Ivemy said: "I was very happy with my run. I was quite happy to stay off the early pace running with Chichester's James Baker and Crawley's Kevin Holland, who are both good runners, but over the second lap I decided to peg back the lead on Ben.

"When I drew close to him I could see he was tiring so I sprinted past and won by 20 yards."

Warren clocked 24min.47sec while Baker took third place in 25min.03sec and Holland fourth in 25min. 10sec.

Brighton and Hove veteran Julia Armstrong led through the first mile in the women's race but Crawley's Charlotte Best eventually eased to victory in 17min.41sec over three miles. Frances Briscoe (Crawley) was second in 18min.02sec and Armstrong third (18min.20sec).
