Brighton's Mike Coyle overcame a strong challenge from top Hampshire and Surrey riders to win Bognor Regis CC's annual Goodwood Classic time trial.
Coyle (VC Etoile) stormed round the hilly 28-mile course in 1hr 11m ins to beat Hampshire riders Rowan Horner and Simon Berogna (St Raphael).
Horner recorded 1:11.31 while Berogna, last year's winner, finished third in 1:13.36. Sussex rider Dave Shepherd (Rother Valley) was sixth in 1:14.57.
Etoile riders Roger Smith (1:16.10) and Tim Mardell (1:16.13) finished tenth and 11th but Etoile were narrowly beaten in the team event by St Raphael whose third man, Malcolm Cox, clocked 1:16.52.
Coyle also won the special prize for the fastest rider to cover the first 7-miles of the course to the top of Goodwood Down by the racecourse. Coyle clocked 21mins 5secs to beat Horner by one second.
Coyle said: "The course and conditions were perfect for me. There were some long hard climbs and although it was a fine morning there was quite a wind blowing, making it a really tough race."
Angela Nainby (East Grinstead) recorded 1:26.29 to win the women's event.
Matt Holmes (Arctic CC, Hertfordshire) won East Grinstead CC's cyclo-cross event, but he was chased all the way by three Sussex riders.
Friston's James Dear (In Gear) finished second ahead of Brighton rider Jonathan Sharpe (Boreas) with East Grinstead's Steve Dennis fourth. Dear, a former Sussex League winner, now leads the standingsahead of Sharpe, the reigning champion.
Mike Coyle is among the favourites for Brighton Mitre's 25-mile event on Sunday which has 20 riders who have beaten 55 minutes among the field. They include Kevin Neary (Leo), Steve Geran (GS Stella) and Chris Birch (St Raphael).
The heqdquarters is the Steyning Centre and the first rider starts at 8am. Good spectator points include the Steyning bypass and Upper Beeding cement works.
