Brighton and Hove has become a member of a group which promotes the best preserved cities in Britain.
It is now the sixth member of Britain's Heritage Cities, joining Edinburgh, Chester, Stratford-upon-Avon, York and Bath.
Working closely with the national tourism body VisitBritain, it promotes member cities mainly to long-haul English speakers, especially in the USA.
It will focus on Brighton and Hove's cultural attractions, history, nightlife, shopping, Regency architecture and transport links.
Deputy city council leader Sue John said: "It's the premier league of UK historic destinations and we're in good company.
"We're grouped with cities that are world famous for exemplifying British history.
"The heritage market is a very important segment for us to target. It's particularly big in the USA and Commonwealth countries.
"Our link to royalty through the Pavilion is an added selling point. If people like Bath or Edinburgh, we know they'll love Brighton and Hove too."
