The 1930/40s Hollywood supporting actor, John Carroll, was certainly a heart-throb to the ladies.
There was always an adventurous, cavalier-type role for this gentleman, as in Only Angels Have Wings (Columbia, 1939) starring Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth and Jean Arthur.
If you preferred his rich, baritone voice, it was evident in Rio-Rita (MGM, 1942) with Kathryn Grayson and Abbott and Costello.
John was christened Julian Lafaye and was born in Mandeville, Louisiana.
He claimed to be a direct descendant of Jean-Lafitte, the dandy among bloodthirsty pirates who used Mandeville as his headquarters.
At 18, John travelled the world and worked as a steeplejack, ship's cook, range rider, racing driver and circus airman.
He studied singing in Italy and performed on the concert platforms in the capitals of Europe. There's versatility for you.
