The Government is out to help the British jewellery industry beat foreign competition by encouraging young people to join it.
The London Development Agency said Government aid worth £420,000 would help a project in Hatton Garden aimed at encouraging youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds into the trade.
Jason Holt, director of the project, said more young people would have to be persuaded to follow a career in jewellery if Hatton Garden was to cope with "fierce" competition from other countries.
"The new money will help us reach those people who would not normally think of a career in jewellery or know about how to get into it."
