An influential group of MPs has urged John Prescott to back Brighton and Hove Albion's proposed new stadium.
The House of Commons' All Party Football Group has written to the Deputy Prime Minister supporting the football ground, at Village Way North, Falmer.
Chairman Alan Keen, a former scout for Premiership side Middlesborough, said: "League football in Brighton and Hove has played a vital part in the city and enhanced community spirit for many years.
"This application offers a superb and unique opportunity to enhance the assets of the local area and is undoubtedly needed, not just for football but for the wider economic, cultural and leisure benefits that will result."
Hove MP Ivor Caplin said the group's backing was a real boost and the stadium would bring jobs to Brighton and Hove.
Lewes MP Norman Baker, a critic of the Falmer proposal, said: "I was not aware the All Party Football Group were experts on planning policy regarding Sussex.
"I hope the Deputy Prime Minister will consider this as a planning issue according to the rules, rather than one based on sectional interests."
Last week, all five Sussex Labour MPs wrote to Mr Prescott, urging him to approve the stadium. A final decision on whether the stadium can be built is expected early next year.
